Volksfest Australia Owners Spotlight: Tell Us About Your VW!
Â
Owner: Kevin Stewart
Â
Q. What model and year is your VW?
A. Year: 1991 Model: T3 Doka (Dual Cab Ute)
Â
Q. How long have you owned it?
A. Around 2 Years
Â
Q. Does your VW have a name? If so, what is it and how did it earn it?
A. It’s called Kelvin (ator), which was going to be the 1991 T3 Transporter Kombi we had before we bought the ute because it looked like a fridge on its side. The badges had been gifted to me by Cheryl, my other half, so they are now on the back of the Ute.
Â
Q. What’s your favourite thing about your VW?
A. Kelvin is a UTE, but he seats 5 and has a Captain’s seat, he is fitted with Air Conditioning and Power Steering, and he is unique, being that there were only 2800 brought into the country between 90 and 91.
Â
Q. What condition was it in when you got it?
A. It was in very good condition when we first saw it and unfortunately had a few dodgy repairs, which recently were fixed properly. So, the rust is gone! and currently waiting to get it back from some motor repairs. It has a 2.1-litre, 5-speed chipped and roller rockers that give it a little more punch.
Â
The VW Journey:
Q. How did you first get into the VW scene?
A. I have always been a revhead and had a thing for VWs, but Cheryl was the instigator and 10 years ago we bought our first, a 1967 Beetle Deluxe, people in and around Volkswagen would have seen Wanda at some of the VW events and since then we’ve owned many Dubs of all different denominations.
Â
Q. Do you own more than one VW? If so, what are they?
A. Cheryl and I have many VW’s, she has as mentioned a 67 Beetle, and a MY19 Turbo Polo and beside the T3, my daily is a 2008 Touareg V6 TDI, but we’re always looking for that next great thing.
Â
Q. What’s the best memory you’ve made with your VW so far?
A. The T3 is in transition at the moment and will soon make lots of memories, most of the memories have been in Cheryl’s 67 Beetle, Wanda.
Â
Q. Have you ever broken down in a hilarious or inconvenient place?
A. My previous T3 snapped a drive and had a little tow truck ride.
Â
Q. Have you made any modifications or restorations? If so, what’s your proudest upgrade?
A. As mentioned above, getting the rust knocked out of it properly and a splash of paint, but with the help of Cousin Don and Steve, we re-made the timber slat in the rear bed from Blackbutt Hardwood and again with their help, we’re going to take that a little further in the Ute bed. Stay tuned.
Â
VW Life & Fun Stuff:
Q. If your VW had a theme song, what would it be?
A. ACDC, Long way to the top
Â
Q. Do you daily drive it, take it to shows, or is it a weekend cruiser?
A. A little of each, but the Touareg is mainly the daily tourer.
Â
Q. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever transported in your VW?
A. In 2019, we owned a 1991 T3 High-top Camper and at the charity auction at VW Spectacular that was held at Macksville, I bid and won a 3-metre slab of Tallowwood and it went into the back of the camper, from the back window on the bed, and through the middle of the front seats, giving me just enough room to lean on it and change gears.
Â
Q. Have you ever gone on a road trip in your VW? If so, where?
A. The first trip to Valla (Macksville) was in 2019 and each time afterwards, Dubs By The Lake up to the last one just gone, and most years to VW Nationals in Sydney.
Â
Q. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to buy their first VW?
A. Have plenty of VW friend, some mechanical knowledge, and have deep pockets.
Â
The Fun & Quirky Side of VW Ownership:
Q. If your VW could talk, what do you think it would say to you?
A. What are you doing to me this time?
Â
Q. What’s the most “VW thing” about your car? (You know, the quirks that only VW owners understand!)
A. The camaraderie of other VW owners have, if you have an older VW, there’s always a wave or a peace sign or the people you run into on the street or at a show, that tell you their VW story when they were a kid.
Â
Q. Do you have a favourite VW event or meetup?
A. Valla of one year, but after last year’s VOLKSFEST, this is the best Valla off year.
Â
Q. What’s your dream VW to own?
A. The one I own and make mine, without Ai or any other fantasy crap.
Â
Q. Is there anything else you’d love to share about your VW journey?
A. There’s always room for another.Â
